Community Projects

Participation in grass-roots non-profit organizations gives the Appalachian Catholic Worker opportunities to offer a unique perspective and a prophetic voice in the charitable projects going on in the area.  Each one listed here has a mission that reflects aims similar to the Catholic Worker, and allows me to serve and work with others in the wider local and regional communities.

Catholic Committee of Appalachiawww.ccappal.org

  • Publishes and distributes the 2 Appalachian Bishops’ pastoral letters: “This Land is Home to Me,” and “At Home in the Web of Life.”
  • Network with other church workers and organizations who work to address the causes of poverty in Appalachia
  • Provide a newsletter, annual meetings and workshops on regional social justice issues which include but are not limited to: education, labor, health care, economic development and fostering sustainable communities.

Sunny Bank Farm, Inc.
The Catholic Worker collaborates with Sunny Bank Farm and its “Our House” project which provides long-term foster care for children with physical disabilities.

West Virginia Regional Land Trust
The Catholic Worker helps to secure this piece of land in Roane County as a natural sanctuary for all who visit, and intentional, sustainable community for those who live there.

Roane Rural Housing
The Catholic Worker assists RHH in supporting, promoting, improving and providing decent, affordable housing to low-income families in Roane County.

Local Annual CROP Walk
The Catholic Worker helps organize and participates in Spencer’s annual CROP Walk held each fall in conjunction with the World Church Service Organization, which works to put an end to world hunger.
